Working from home offers the best of both worlds, but not without its unique challenges. Coping with living where you work, and working where you live, can be more complicated than it appeared when you first thought it would be. Here are 6 ways to master your work from home routine.
1. Plan A Routine/Schedule
Working from home is really convenient. You can work at your own pace and at a time that works best for you, but it’s better not to get carried away. The lack of a regular work schedule may become hazardous to your productivity. Your plan should clearly state what you should be doing and when it is going to be done.
2. Create Your Workspace
More important than your routine is to prepare a private space for yourself where you will be able to work without any distractions. This can be a separate room in your house or even a corner in your bedroom. It’s important to work without any distractions, especially when you are only starting out.
Distractions like emails, pets, and the urge to check Facebook can shift your focus to unimportant or irrelevant factors, resulting in a waste of valuable time. Make sure your family and friends know when you will be working, and ask them not to distract you while you are working.
3. Look The Part
Even if you won’t be interacting with people all day, it’s important to get out of your PJs. This will tell your brain that it’s work time and that will give you a lot more energy even if it’s a simple black t-shirt and pants.
4. Take Breaks
There’s tons of research that indicates we work our best by taking short breaks in between tasks and projects. The key is to make sure you take the time to refresh your mind and body. Remember that a 15-minute break will make all the difference when working a long day.
5. Turn Off Notifications
Turning off alerts on your computer and phone will improve your ability to focus. When you need to get things done, turn off anything that might distract you. Once you’re done, pull up your notifications and see what you might have missed during your breaks.
6. Tidy Up At The End Of The Day
Things find their way into your office, especially when it’s in your home. The best solution to this is to take 5 to 10 minutes at the end of the day and clear away your workspace. That way you will have a fresh new start the next day without any clutter.
Shifting your work environment to your home can be a challenge, but with a few simple changes to your routine and space, you will find that you can still have a productive workday.
